A period of time after birth in which the mother eschews contact with those outside the nuclear family, so that her time and attention can be focused on herself and her new baby in order to maximally bond, physically and emotionally recover, and enjoy the postpartum time.
It is analogous to "honeymoon" in that it is the intimate, secluded part of a celebration of a special, life-changing event, and a vacation from the usual concerns and demands of the world.
