It is mostly used by talkative teenagers who either don't have an easy access emoji keyboard, or they talk too much to have time to use the emoji keyboard. Also used to show more emotion in your comedic reaction than a simple "lol" or "lmao". "XD" resembles a close-eyed laughing face, appearing to be falling over
