1) A personal choice, like wanting your first time to be with someone you really love, instead of just hooking up, or wanting to avoid getting an STD. 2) Religious reasons, as many religions like Christianity and Islam forbid sex until you are married (see: abstinence) or forbid having sex at all, like in the case of Buddhist Monks (see: chastity). While this is not as upheld as it once was, diehard followers of their religion will still practice this.
3) Simply not being able to get laid. This could be because of poor appearance, lack social skills, hygiene problems, and/or just not putting in an honest effort. This is the most common reason for being a legal virgin. (see also: incel and inceldom).
(note: different from legal virginity, which is not having a criminal record)
