boston goodbye

Old-school way of ousting someone from the community as retribution for wrongdoing without involving the police. Quietly telling everyone (bouncers, bartenders, grocery store cashiers, mail carriers, blockbuster employees, etc.) about the person’s misdeed so that no one will serve them or help them anywhere in the neighborhood and they have no choice but to move.

A form a vigilante justice.
“He robbed your car and raped your sister, and you’re not calling the police?!”

“Nah. We’re givin’ him the old Boston Goodbye, and he’ll be outta Southie for good.”

*note, the word c-a-r is pronounced CAwh.

The Portuguese Goodbye

The Portuguese Goodbye refers to a parting of ways that unfolds in stages over tens of minutes, typically involving different people taking turns reviving and extending a conversation that only appears to all non-Portuguese participants as having already reached its natural conclusion.
The way my Portuguese in-laws say goodbye after Sunday dinner typically takes 30 minutes from the first 'we need to go' to the rest of the family encircling their car in the driveway to wave at them while they disappear over the horizon - "the portuguese goodbye" par excellence.
