Its members dominate all sorts of sectors from pharmaceuticals, port development, to the steel industry and the food business, among others. Name an industry prominent in and out of Gujarat and it would be difficult not to find a Patel associated with it. Markers to the influence of Patels are ubiquitous. And some might say unnecessary.

As in the past, when the upper strata of Patidars had differentiated themselves from the lower levels by contracting hypergamous marriages. The early Patidar families married their daughters to Anavil Brahmins, the 'old aristocracy' of the area, who were tax collectors for the Mughals before the Marathas came.
Patels are still driven by a desire to acquire social distinction.
