Next to the well known laughs out loud, it's an actual word.
In dutch that is.

Lol means 'plezier' which, translated back to english, means pleasure, joy, delight, happy.

And even though this probably doesn't have any use to you, you now know it's an actual word. Even though it might not be in your language.

person2: Why do you use lame words that don't even exist?
person1: Its a wrd, just not in ur language, n00b!1!

1) "Laugh Out Loud" used in texts, IM's, twitters, etc, meaning to laugh.. only virtually
~Others include ROFL, LMAO, LMFAO, TISF, HAHAHAHAHAHA, tehe, xD

2) "Lots of Love" usually parents or relatives who send you something on the internet caps it LOL or sent to you by a lover

3) "Lots of Lettuce" used to tell subway or quiznos you like lettuce :

1) laugh out loud
Maddii: "Today we went iceblocking and fell off the edge"
Friend: "LOL hahahahaha"
MAddii: "Its not that funny"

2) lots of love
Maddii: "STATUS: So cold and yet so much fun!"
Aunt: "Im so sorry but enjoy your-self:) LOL"

3) lots of lettuce
Maddii: "Bacon, ham, LOL, mustard...."

Originally created as an acronym for Laugh Out Loud, used mostly in internet chat rooms and online video games to express amusement, usually in response to a statement or joke made by another.

In the current day however, it has been massively overused and now basically means "I am too lazy to think of anything worthwhile to respond". Lol is also commonly used as a sentence filler, replacing periods or simply trying to make the statement not seem to serious. Unfortunately, it is not hard to fall into a habit of using it as the filler.

Now a days when people want to express actual amusement at a statement like lol originally meant, they will usually just spell out "haha" or enhance lol with an explanation point or multiple "L"s and "O"s.
