How serious they took the event is what is humorous. The ridiculousness of the situation, and how important the event is to them, draws people in to watch. People want to see what's going to happen in their world, and how each situation will play out. I think the cutting back and forth from each character also lets the audience experience humor from different scenes, which makes it so the film stays interesting.
