A person born in Latin America, or that has heritage in Latin America. Latin America includes South America, Central America, and the 3 Hispanic-Caribbean Islands: Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic. ONLY people from Latin America are Latinos. Spaniards, Italians, and Portugues are NOT latino whatsoever. their languages are latin-derived, but they are not part of latin america, therefore, they are not latinos. the word Latino does NOT mean descendent of the latins from the roman empire; it literally means people from Latin America.
Latinos can be of any race and skin color. There are black latinos, white latinos, and indigenous latinos. There are also many mixed-raced latinos (mestizos, mulattos, afro-mestizos). many latinos descend from the African slaves brought to Latin America, the Spanish conquistadores, and/or the Indigenous peoples. many people of many different races have immigrated to Latin America throughout history; they too are Latinos. ex: Shakira is of Lebanese descent, but her family immigrated to Colombia, where she was born. she is an Arab Latina.

Get the Latino heat mug.An American (or Canadian) of Latino descent, mainly Mexican. This refers to Latinos who base their entire identity around Mexican "culture" that was developed through American TV shows, movies, music, pop culture and slang. Most of them are unlikely to speak Spanish and will often use programs like Google Translate to communicate with native-born Latin Americans.
Similar to Plastic Irish, they've never visited the home country their ethnic origins originated from and merely just identify with a flanderized/glammorized version of their parents or grandparents culture. Plastic Latinos mainly draw their influence from Black and Native activist groups, those that originated in the latter half of the 20th century. Most of them believe in the La Raza ideology which pushes to reunite the Southwestern US with Mexico and in some cases, the Midwest, Rockies and British Columbia as well.
Plastic Latinos can be found commonly in Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, New Jersey and more recently in states like Idaho and Utah. They also exist in major cities too like in Chicago or NYC.

Get the Callos latinos mug.Nowadays, the term Latino is used to describe somebody who originates from a Spanish-speaking country in Latino America.
Some things to take note about Latinos is that ANYONE can be Latino regardless of race, because Latino is an emphasizer of ethnicity. From a pale-skinned ginger from Mexico to a dark-skinned curlyhead from Puerto Rico, we are all Latinos whose land was colonized by the Spaniards.
(Except for the Guianas and Brazil because they were colonized by the Portuguese and British. As a result, they’re associated with South America, but not LATINO America)
Second note, no, Spaniards are not Latino. They are Hispanic because they’re also a Spanish-speaking country, but they are not Latino—they’re Europeans.
Third note, no, the French and the Italians and whoever else is European with Latin roots—they’re not Latino either! They are Latin, yes, but that is a separate term and they do not originate from Latino America. (Nor do they speak Spanish.)
Aaand that sums up a Latino.
