T.O.S

T.O.S is a shorthand for a trashy offshoot or even a sad old touch of shit. Often a rather so bad it’s good schlockbuster or even a foreign, not so good mockbuster.

What do you think of that Hindi Tarzan mockbuster Marvin? It surely is a T.O.S hit from the wild C-grade underbelly of Bollywood cathouse adventure films that were cash ins on the success of the Indiana Jones movies!

Shinboesque

Shinboesque refers to the distinctive visual style, ways and mannerisms that director Akiyuki Shinbo has spread into the anime industry at large, especially through Studio Shaft and Studio Pierrot.

Even at Dragon Ball Z’s massively messy launch, Minoru Maeda resorted to Akiyuki Shinboesque directing methods to emphasise his perspectives on Goku and his son Gohan.

A Shinbo Run refers to the mad rapid running of characters in many an Akiyuki Shinbo directed work.

Perhaps amongst the first characters to do a Shinbo Run is Remy in Goshogun: The Time Étranger.

Tiger Mask

Tiger Mask is a hood classic of a Shonen manga centred on the dangerous world of pro wrestling, crimes and all. The titular antihero, inspired by Kamishibai stories surrounding different antiheroes with animal masks, is nonetheless a rather interesting take on the Batman legend.

Tiger Mask’s first anime show was the reason why a certain animator named Keiichiro Kimura basically invented much of the tv anime vocab.

YuYu Hakusho was made before Hunter x Hunter and yet gained a stunning anime with a dope-load of fashion edge.

YuYu Hakusho, having launched in the early 90s, has become known for its incredible swag that still never gets upon our nerves even today.

Kenya Boy

Kenya Boy is perhaps the one tale that most likely has inspired Cyborg 009, since Sōji Yamakawa and Shotaro Ishinomori were basically Tohoku natives living in Tokyo.

The setting of Kenya Boy is usually and most likely the East African subcontinent where the titular hero lives, and so in a Jungle Jim-ish fashion, was uneasily bonded with a broken bird English Rose and a Maasai Golden Oldie.
